Winter Opera St. Louis – a non-profit, professional opera company whose mission is to provide St. Louis with world-class operatic performances during winter months – concludes its 11th season with Gaetano Donizetti’s delightful comic opera, “L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love.”)
An opening performance at 7:30 p.m, on Friday, March 9 will be followed by a second performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 11. Winter Opera’s production of “L’elisir d’amore” is sponsored by Nancy Pillsbury, and will be performed in Italian with projected English supertitles.
The story of L’elisir d’amore centers around the poor villager Nemorino. Nemorino is in love with the wealthy and beautiful Adina, but she doesn’t even notice him. Desperate to win her affection, he buys a love potion from a traveling salesman. Will the magical elixir help him succeed and win Adina’s affection? As Nemorino contemplates his future, he sings one of the most hauntingly beautiful arias in all of opera, “Una furtiva lagrima.”
Peter Drackley (Nemorino), returns to Winter Opera after performing at the Fall Gala this past September. Peter’s previous operatic credits include Rodolfo in La bohème, Gerald in Lakmé, Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress, and Alfredo in La Traviata. He has performed with Utah Festival Opera, the National Cathedral, Teatro Grattacielo, Lyric Opera Baltimore, and Venture Opera.
Adina will be performed by Winter Opera’s General Director an acclaimed soprano Gina Galati, whose flexible yet powerful voice and dramatic range have won her critical acclaim and a growing repertoire of leading roles, including Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Mimì and Musetta in La Bohème, Nedda in I Pagliacci, and The cast also includes baritone Christopher Holloway as the dashing soldier Belcore, bass Andrew Potter (previously featured in Winter Opera’s performances of La Cenerentola and Borgia Infami) as the traveling salesman, Dulcamara, and a large chorus of local artists. Both performances will be held at the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts at Chaminade Preparatory School, an outstanding theatrical facility in the St. Louis area.
